Extract two 16 bit words from a 32 bit word
The bitmasks for MSB are 0xFFFF0000 and LSB is 0x0000FFFF.
The bitmasks for MSB are 0xFFFF0000 and LSB is 0x0000FFFF.
What function would i use for this then?

Have you considered reading it as a 16 bit word?
